I have been missing you guys so, so, so much lately! Hello Creative Family has been on the back burner for the last couple of months as I’ve been working on my very first craft book, being published this fall by Skyhorse Press! You guys, this book is just the cutest and I’ve been having so much fun making it! As soon as the cover is up on online retailers websites I’ll share the title with you and how to pre-order it… but for now “mums the word!”

99.9% of my craft time has been going into crafts for the book, which means that when I am making other crafts they have to be quick, easy and oh so cute! Which is exactly what today’s project is! Back in April I headed to Salt Lake City for my annual weekend away at SNAP Conference. While I was there I got to hang out with fellow creatives, learn some interesting tips of the trade and spend time crafting with my friends. One of the nights we had a crafting in your pj’s party and the room was filled with tables set up to make different crafts. One of my favorite tables was the pom pom table. They had all kinds of fun colors of yarn, pom pom makers and different accessories to attach your pom poms to– like earrings! I love to DIY pom poms, and have taught classes in my community for making pom pom hair accessories, but I had never made pom pom earrings before!

At home I usually use store bought pom-pom makers for making my pom poms, but when I teach classes I always teach my students how to make their own pom pom makers out of cardboard. One of the best things about DIYing your own pom-pom maker is that you are never limited as to what size of poms you can make! You could make a pom pom that’s half an inch wide, or a pom pom that’s 6 inches wide! Trust me, once you know how to make your own pom-poms you’ll be pomming everything– but today we’re going to start with these super cute DIY pom pom earrings! Ready to learn how to make them? DIY Pom Pom Earrings + Learn How To Make a DIY Pom Pom Maker!

Materials:

-Yarn (I love these little yarn bon bons for pom pom making. You can get a bunch of colors of yarn without breaking the bank.)

-Scissors (This is the pair I use)

-Cardboard

-Earring wires (I use ones like these)

Directions:

Step 1: Cut a rectangular shape out of a piece of cardboard. Cut a slit down in the cardboard going about ¾ of the way down the center of the length of the cardboard. I think it looks like a pair of pants! How wide your cardboard is across the two “legs” is how wide across your pom pom will be.

Step 2: Hold the end of your string of yarn against one of the “legs” of your “cardboard pants” and start winding the yarn around and around and around. The way your wrap your yarn will create different patterns in your pom-pom. You can decide whether you want to wrap one color of yarn at a time, make a few layers and then switch to another color of yarn, or if you want to wrap multiple colors of yarn at one time.

Step 3: Once you are satisfied with the thickness of your yarn cut the yarn and then with the yarn still wrapped around the cardboard pom pom maker, tie it tightly around the middle with a second piece of yarn. Make several knots to make sure that the center band of yarn is tied tightly. Leave the long strands hanging. This is what you’ll use to attach your pom pom to the earring.

Step 4: Slide your pom-pom off your cardboard pom maker. Use scissors to cut down the center of your looped ends.

Step 5: Now it’s time to give your pom pom a nice haircut to give it a nice round shape. I like squishing it like a hamburger and cutting a circle around the edges of my pom-pom. Make sure you don’t cut the two long pieces of yarn that you’ve left hanging.

Step 6: Take the two long pieces of yarn and tie your pom pom to your earring making sure that your knot is snug against the pom pom and the earring. I usually knot 3-4 times to make sure my knot is nice and tight. Trim the long ends of the yarn off with your scissors.

Repeat steps 1-6 to make your second earring! Voila! You have a pretty pair of earrings! My daughter has been wearing her pom pom earrings to school and gets tons of compliments. They are so easy to make that we can quickly whip up a pair to go with any of her outfits!
