I love gardening. My dream is to one day have a home with a plot of land big enough that I can have a big fruit and veggie plot and flower garden in the back. In Vancouver Community Garden ‘s are very popular. We have had a Vancouver community garden plot for 4 years and we love it. It’s a small plot up on a hill where it get’s tons of sun. The plot is 6 feet by 8 feet and is one of about 50 plots.

One of my favorite things about our community garden plot is the communal fruit. Around the garden there are blueberry bushes, strawberry plants, grape vines and apple, plum, pear and fig trees that everyone shares.  We always make sure to water the grapes and blueberries that are closest to our plot and then when the fruit ripens everyone is free to help themselves. Most of the time people are really good and don’t strip the bushes completely free of fruit… though for some reason that seems to happen with the plum tree.

We planted fruits and vegetables in one box and flowers in the other. It’s my first year growing dahlias, which are one of my favorite flowers, so I’m very excited to have room to grow flowers this year.

Gardening with kids, even if you only have room for container gardening on a back patio or on a windowsill, is a great idea. There are so many benefits of gardening with kids. I devoted an entire post to benefits of gardening with kids that you can read here.

I love taking pictures of my harvests. We haven’t had too many yet, as we wait for things to ripen, but here are my harvest pictures from this year.

Tell me… do you garden? What are your favorite things to grow? Have you been able to harvest anything yet this summer? Would your dream home include a big, backyard garden?
