Review & Giveaway from Simple Things Patterns

Confession… even though my blog is called Sew Creative… I’m actually terrified of sewing. Well I should be more clear. I’m very happy creating projects on my own and sewing them up, but when it comes to following sewing patterns I freak out. A few months ago I was taking a peek through my Instagram feed (you can follow Sew Creative on Instagram here), when I noticed this adorable Blossom Hat from Simple Things Patterns.

The Blossom Hat Pattern Photo I immediately fell in love with the hat and commented on the Instagram photo to that effect. Before I knew it, Kimberly the owner, sent me an email and asked me if I would like for her to send me a copy of the pattern. I jumped at the opportunity. It’s summer and Bean looks so cute in sun hats, and this sun hat pattern goes all the way from size 0-3 month to size 5! I had grand ideas that this was the project that was going to get me sewing using patterns.

Kimberly sent me the pattern really quickly, I printed it out, read it over… and then I got cold feet. Reading through the pattern I felt intimidated and filled with self doubt. For some reason my brain just doesn’t comprehend patterns. I showed the pattern to a friend and she gave me some notes but those were intimidating too so I decided to forget about it for awhile.

Then we started getting ready for our trip to Calgary and I thought “Bean really does need a cute sun hat for our trip.” On a whim I pulled out the pattern, had Bean pick out two of her favourite fabrics from my stash and I set to work.

1 hour later I had this adorable sun hat in my hands, and I didn’t look at my friend’s cheat sheet even once. I did it all by myself! Yes, the pattern turned out to be simple enough for a novice seamstress like myself to use, if I didn’t let my self doubt get in the way. The hat is absolutely adorable. I love that it is reversible so it’s really like two hats in one. Here is Bean wearing the puppy side out at the Calgary Zoo.
